Why would you want to keep a parrot?

The very first question that you should ask yourself: “How much do you know about parrots?”

Parrots are known to be very noisy, they can scream all day long and their vocal can be heard within 200m or even more. They need attention, they scream to get your attention and can go on for the whole day. They are destructive, they can tear down wooden perches within hours, destroy their toys within days. They are very messy when they eat, they can splash their food all over the floor. When they bite, they draw bloods. When they are ill, you need to bring them to see vet. The life span of a parrot can range from 18 years old to 100 years old. Are you ready for such a long-term commitment?

They need all kind of food like fruits, vegetables, seeds mixture, pellets etc. Their cage needs to be wash every weeks, poo tray needs to be clean everyday. You need to clean your house everyday because of feathers floating around and seeds shell flying around when they starts to flap their wings.

Parrots are very intelligent animals. Some of them can talk well when properly trained. Most parrots are like clown, they like to play a lot and they are very acrobatic. You can see them entertaining themselves with the toys that you bought for them.

Most of us have read and gather information on Parrot keeping, health, breeding, toys etc from the net. Most of these are base on foreign context which may not suit our birds in local climate and condition.

To avoid any unnecessary risk to the well-being of our feathered friends, we can share our experience here. May it be your good, bad or ugly experience, it will help to prevent others from doing the same mistake. And that will be a great service you have done to save a bird from going through avoidable sufferings. Please send in your article and we will update it here for all to enjoy and learn.

Information in this site are mostly contributed by fellow Parrot enthusiast sharing their very personal experience of the feathered friends they have. Your contributions will be much appreciated too. You don't need to have years of Parrot keeping experience to share your experience. What we seek are firsthand experience and it can be both the wonderful aspects as well as negative aspects of Parrot keeping.
